How each planning tool helps doctors

A closer look at what every calculator and planner does, who it is for, and the key figures it works out.

Mortgage calculator

Property

The doctor mortgage calculator estimates how much you could borrow, your likely monthly repayments and whether a purchase is affordable — using lending criteria built around how medical income actually works.

It mirrors how an underwriter assesses a case: your borrowing power is the lower of an income-multiple cap and a stress-tested affordability check, so you see the real constraint rather than just a headline figure. It is ideal for first-time buyers, trainees, locums and consultants planning a move.

  • Most lenders cap borrowing at around 4.5× gross income; some specialist lenders go higher for medical professionals.
  • Affordability is stress-tested against your commitments and a higher assumed interest rate.
  • Additional income such as locum, private-practice or rental earnings is counted at a prudent discount.
  • Runs entirely in your browser — no credit check and no impact on your credit score.

NHS pension planner

Retirement

The NHS pension planner models your benefits across the 1995, 2008 and 2015 schemes, projects your retirement income and tax-free lump sum, and checks whether your pension growth risks an annual allowance tax charge.

Because the NHS scheme is defined-benefit, a pay rise or promotion can spike your pension growth and trigger a charge even though your contributions look unchanged. The planner surfaces that, reflects the McCloud remedy, and lets you enter your existing Total Reward Statement figures for a realistic estimate.

  • Covers the 1995 (1/80 plus an automatic lump sum), 2008 (1/60) and 2015 (1/54 career-average) schemes.
  • Standard annual allowance is £60,000 for 2026/27, tapering to £10,000 for the highest earners.
  • Accounts for the McCloud remedy, which moved active members to the 2015 scheme from April 2022.
  • Estimates your retirement income, lump sum and any annual allowance charge you may face.

Take-home pay calculator

Income

The take-home pay calculator shows what actually lands in your account each month after income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan repayments.

It is designed around the pinch points doctors hit — especially the band between £100,000 and £125,140 where the personal allowance is withdrawn, creating an effective marginal tax rate of around 60% (higher in Scotland). Seeing this clearly helps you judge whether extra sessions or pension contributions are worthwhile.

  • Models income tax, National Insurance and NHS pension contribution tiers.
  • Highlights the 60% effective tax band between £100,000 and £125,140.
  • Handles Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 and postgraduate student loan repayments.
  • Shows both monthly and annual take-home so you can plan real budgets.

Income protection calculator

Protection

The income protection calculator helps you size cover around your NHS sick pay, so a period of illness or injury does not leave a gap between what you earn and what you need.

NHS sick pay is valuable but time-limited, stepping down from full to half pay and then ending based on your length of service. The tool helps you set a deferred period that begins when NHS pay reduces, and a benefit level that protects your essential outgoings.

  • NHS sick pay steps down from full pay to half pay by length of service, then stops.
  • Own-occupation cover — which pays if you cannot do your own medical role — matters most for clinicians.
  • Most insurers cover 50–70% of gross income, usually paid tax-free.
  • Matching the deferred period to your sick-pay step-down keeps cover efficient.

Investment & ISA planner

Investing

The investment and ISA planner helps you plan contributions across ISAs, pensions and general accounts, and projects how your investments could grow over time.

It is aimed at doctors who are investing beyond the NHS pension — for example after using pension allowances — and want to make deliberate use of tax-efficient wrappers rather than leaving cash idle. Projections are shown net of inflation so the figures stay meaningful.

  • Plans ISA contributions within the £20,000 allowance for 2026/27.
  • Compares saving through ISAs, pensions and general investment accounts.
  • Projects growth net of inflation and charges over your chosen horizon.
  • Built for doctors investing after making the most of the NHS pension.

Lifetime plan

Planning

The lifetime plan brings every part of your finances — NHS pension, mortgage, tax, protection and investments — together into a single view of your financial future.

Instead of looking at each tool in isolation, it projects your net worth across your whole career and into retirement, and highlights the single next best action across your entire plan. It is the hub that ties the individual calculators together.

  • Combines pension, mortgage, tax, protection and investment data in one place.
  • Projects your net worth across your working years and into retirement.
  • Surfaces the most valuable next step across your whole plan.
  • Updates automatically as you complete each individual tool.
